Magnolia Makeover

Are you a Fixer Upper fan? Well, I've been watching Fixer Upper since it came on HGTV  a few seasons back,  yep I'm a big fan of the hit show that stars Jojo and Chip Gaines and their adorable family, they have the cutest kids too, I mean BIG....see this post and this post if your still not convinced.  I love Jojo sense of design style and Chip's silliness, the two of them make quite the renovation team together and it's so refreshing to watch. I have a WHOLE Pinterest board dedicated to just them. I think it's their down to earth personalities that make them so relatable to their audience.  Well, they are in the mist of filming Season 4 and since it's a long time before we can get our Fixer Upper FIX so they are having a Magnolia Makeover contest on their Instagram feed. 

I took these pictures on my ipad this morning and its a very dreary, drizzly day  in So Cal so I'm sorry for the quality of the images.  Since my kitchen really, really, really needs a makeover and I'd love to have a little of Jojo's Makeover Magic touch in my kitchen I'm submitting this Kitchen collage for the challenge.  Magnolia {Joanna and Chips's brick and mortar store} I have on my bucket list to visit in Waco, Texas.  I don't know if I'll ever make it out to Texas in the near future so having a bit of Magnolia Magic sprinkled in my kitchen would be AWESOME!  Go HERE to enter, Jojo will announce the winner on June 15th! Bring on Summer, Celebrating with Celebs and World Market!

So much has been going on since my last post of my daughters' Senior Prom , her 18th birthday, her high school graduation, but I was able to squeeze in a fabulous outdoor party hosted by World Market to Celebrate the Outdoors and usher in Summer!

The venue was this darling little 1920's Spanish Colonial where the party was located, steps away from Santa Monica Beach.  This little Spanish coloial has quite the history surrounding it, think John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe {the ron-de-vu villa} and it was once owned by Douglas Fairbanks but today it is owned by a family in Santa Barbara. You know I'm always interested in the history of homes and not only that I was a lucky girl to attend this World Market event with my long time and close friend, T. What could of been better than that? An old home with character and history, tasty food and drinks, designer celebs, T.V. personalities,  and sharing it with my girlfriend, my idea of a perfect day!

There was a little photo prop booth set up right on the beach, what a perfect back drop for pictures.

The weather was great and so was the company.

Yes the awesome designer Sabrina Soto from HGTV, oh my gosh, was she the sweetest thing, so pretty and down to earth.

The talented Mrs. Patmore from Downton Abbey fame, Lesley Nicol {you might of seen her on The Catch recently} What a doll she was! 

Not only I did I get to "hobnob" with T.V. celebs but Blogger Celebs too! 

Cori George from Let's Make Stuff blog and April Liewer from illistyle  were manning the Make Your Own Terrarium station.  So fun to do and mine came out great, perfect for my Cottage on Cullen.

Here is mine and it is now residing on my front porch and looking fabulous!

Everyone got to create one and they could choose from 3 different types of terrarium bases and beachy materials, all unique in their own way.

The "party house" was styled inside and out by two AWESOME  designers, Justina Blakeney , from the blog The Jungalow and Anne Sage. 

Come on in, lets take a look at this fabulous Boho Chic home, these beautiful French doors lead out to the pool area and behind that is the Santa Monica beach.

This is just to the right, oh I could see myself sipping a glass of Sangria looking at the beautiful and tranquil Pacific Ocean.

This couch sits behind the chair and ottoman and this family room is opened up to the kitchen and optimized for social interaction and conversation.

Of course I loved all the white slipcovered sofas and chairs, very beachy with a splash of  boho chic. Even the dining room table was all decked out and decorated for summer. Let's go check it out, shall we?

Michelle Stewart from the blog Michelle's Party Plan it did and awesome job styling the table, not only was the beach house décor calling my name so was all the yummy appetizers and desserts.

All this tastiness was from World Market and all sooo delish.  I had to sample quite a few of the desserts.  Would you just stop at one?

 

Loving the wood sailboat, the buoy, the hurricane holder wrapped in jute with a white candle nesting in sand all surrounding the rustic crate with a white ceramic octopus to stand guard over the bites.  Love it!

Look at this pool, the Spanish tile was so pretty!  I didn't want to go...but I suppose all good things must come to an end.

Jojo is a Fashionista

 

It is no secret that I'm a BIG fan of Jojo Gaines from the hit show Fixer Upper on HGTV.  Not only do I love, love her design on the homes that she creates for her clients but I'm a big fan of her wardrobe too.  When I watch the show and I never miss an episode I find myself wondering about a certain article of clothing she will be wearing.  This lacy white dress with the jean jackets is very much like how she styles her farmhouse homes, a bit of the feminine with the timeworn. 

This was another dress I was like WOW!! I love the colorful pattern and the shape of this dress.  Lot's of times she adds pops of color in with a very neutral backdrop.

Speaking of color, I love the color red and she rocks this comfy wrap jacket in her black booties.

Her she is another colorful, comfy outfit, an orangy-red maxi dress, jean jacket and cute sandals.

I think this ruffly grey shirt is fabulous tucked in to jeans with a skinny leather belt.

A big party of Jojo's wardrobe are her boots. Black or brown most of her outfits she has a pair of her trusty go-to boots.  I think this outfit rocks and nice comfy, knit black dress with a colorful green scarf.

Love the color combo of the knitted skirt in mustard with the navy cardigan. 

This is another favorite outfit Chambray and Jeans with a navy blazer.  Love the mix of textures exactly how she creates her magic in the homes she designs.

Great looking jacket!! Looks fantastic on her.

Fixer Upper Season 3 is on TONIGHT!! Can I get a Whoop, Whoop!

I'm so excited that in a few hours Season 3 begins for the hit show that airs on HGTV...

I loved this house in Season 3 of Fixer Upper, an adorable Cottage!

Fixer Upper!!!  This room is on tonights episode, I do believe.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, have you been living under a cave?  Go HERE to see a post I did a few months back when I discovered the Dynamic Married Designer Duo.  Chip always brings a smile to my face with all of his antics and how Jojo just laughs at him.  Now from a design point of view,  Jojo knows how to mix it up Farmhouse Style with a bit of the the old and the rusty-crusty and the bit of new thrown in for good measure.  

The way she puts together  colorful patterns with crisp white. 

 She uses my favorite colors, soft sand or Robin's Egg blue  and natural warn or reclaimed woods and shiplap, lots and lots of white shiplap.  They just redid the Silos in Waco, Texas for a farmhouse shopping experience.  I wish I lived in Texas or even close by, I think at trip is in order.

FIFA Women's World Cup..I'll be watching and rooting for USA

As a long time soccer player I'll be watching the World Cup the next few weeks and rooting for our United States National Women's Team.  I love to watch them play and I've started to follow quite a few of the players on Instagram.  Hope we can pull out a win this year, we can close last time, four years ago when we lost to Japan.  Are you a fan of soccer?  Are you a fan of the World Cup? 

 

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Movie and The First Best Curried Chicken with Vegetables Recipe

Yes, I know that Post Title is a MOUTHFUL!!

Don't you just love the exotic flavors from India?  Well, I have an Indian Dish for you that is so flavorful, it uses lots of different spices that your family will be begging you to make for them on a regular basis.  It's been in my recipe repertoire for as long as I can remember and I decided to pull it out and share it with you in honor of the release of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a Movie that takes place in India and World Market has a Sweepstakes for a Trip for two to the exotic country of India and much, much more....I'll tell  you about the sweepstakes at the end of this post so stick around. 

 First up is setting up the mood for my Indian Dish. I wanted to set my table with décor from India  and I found some colorful and beautiful items at my local Cost Plus World Market in their worldly decor department. 

 I loved these hand painted plates with the elephants on them.  They have a few different variations of this design. Did you know that the elephant is a symbol of good luck in the Indian culture?  Yep, it sure is.  You won't need any wishes of good luck with this recipe it is sooo  good and won't fail you, that's why it's the "FIRST BEST" Curried Chicken with Veggies Recipe.  But before I get into the nitty gritty of this tasty recipe I wanted to share this colorful table place setting with you. I fell in love with so many things at World Market it was hard to choose. 

Under the elephant plate I used clear glass plates as a charger but World Market has many different types of chargers to choose from I saw some cute rattan ones and some in different shades of metallic which I was leaning towards but ended with the clear ones.  I also added the aqua and green with a crocheted raspberry-colored rose napkin to pick up the blue and green in the plate and candles.  I added the teal and gold tea glasses  that I used as votive holders for a touch of glimmer and shimmer to the table.  The paisley battery-operated candles are from World Market, but I got them a few summers ago. I decided to use them because their colors went so well with the elephant plates and the napkins.

Aren't these "votive holders" very elegant?  I thought they looked very regal in teal with the gold.  When I think of Indian Style décor I always think of the use of bright happy colors {reds, yellows, oranges and blues}  with rich textures, a bit of shimmer and shine just sort of like their food. Indian food is know for the use of exotic spices and layers of flavors in their cuisine , such as curry and ginger and a bit of heat. Without further ado....I give you.....

~~~~~ The  "First Best" Curried Chicken with Veggies and Apples~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 World Market carries many International Foods that they curate from around the globe and are unique to the store.  It's a culinary adventure when I'm browsing the many items they have, things that you can't find anywhere else.  I picked up most of my ingredients from there to make this delish dish. 

Ingredients:

 ~1/2 cup of honey {El Brazal Spanish Honey

~1/4 cup of prepared mustard {Maille Dijon Mustard}

~1/4 cup butter or margarine

~2 tablespoons of finely chopped onion

~2 tablespoons water

~1 clove of garlic

~2 teaspoons of Natco Madras Curry Powder

~1 teaspoon of salt

~1/4 teaspoon World Market Crushed Red Pepper

~1/4 teaspoon World Market Ground Ginger

~1  2 1/2 to 3 lb. broiler-fryer chicken

~cooking oil or butter

~2 large potatoes, peeled and quartered, or 8 new potatoes

~6 medium carrots, bias sliced into 1/2 pieces

~2 medium apples, cored and cut into wedges

Here is what your going to do..........First things first preheat oven to 375 degrees....

 

 
 In small saucepan combine the first ten ingredients.  Bring to  a boil, stirring constantly.  Remove from heat, set aside.  Just look at all those spices and flavors combining with a bit of heat.

 Rinse chicken and pat dry with paper towel, skewer neck skin to back. Tie legs to tail, twist wing tips under back.  Place chicken, breast-side up, on a rack in a shallow roasting pan.  Brush skin with cooking oil or melted butter.  During roasting, remove excess fat.  Insert a meat thermomoter, roast chicken uncovered in oven for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours.

 Meanwhile in a covered saucepan cook potatoes and carrots in boiling salted water for 20-25 minutes or until nearly tender, drain.  the last 20 minutes of roasting time, discard any fat in roasting pan from chicken. 

When the chicken is looking a nice even brown color.....

Arrange vegetables and the uncooked apples around poultry in pan.  Spoon honey mixture over chicken, veggies and apples.  Roast 20 minutes longer or until meat thermomoter registers 185 degrees.  Baste occasionally with honey mixture during roasting and again just before serving. Arrange chicken, vegetables and apples on serving platter.

   I used this white beaded baking dish, it was the perfect size and held all the yummy sauce.

Like I said, this post was Inspired by the new release of the movie The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which is a sequel to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which was released in May 2012 .  It has an all star cast including one of my favorite actors Richard Gere.

 Here is a little synopsis of what the movie is all about...

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Dev Patel), and it’s making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai). Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy – posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two eligible and very wealthy suitors. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is newly installed co-manager of the hotel, Muriel (Maggie Smith), the keeper of everyone’s secrets. As the demands of a traditional Indian wedding threaten to engulf them all, an unexpected way forward presents itself.

And the Oscar Goes to.....

 

I won't be getting all dressed up or even attending an Oscar party tonight, I'll be watching it from the comfort from my couch.  My Mother and I used to watch every year it was "our thang".  We loved watching all the actresses and their beautiful gowns looking radiant and excited.  We loved hearing the unexpected acceptance speeches from the winners.

I remember when Sally Field gave her "You must really like me" acceptance speech.

I loved it when Adrian Brody won for The Piano and he jumped up on the chairs and planted a kiss on Halle Berry, his reaction was so raw and unplanned...loved that!  One of my favorite moments in Oscar History. 

Who did not love it last year when Ellen DeGeneres hosted the Oscars, she was soooo funny!!  I thought it was hilarious when she took the biggest selfie and ordered Pizza for the nominees.

Like I said, one of my favorite parts is seeing what the Actresses will wear on the red carpet.  The above chart is what each Best Actress winner wore since May of 1929, when the first Academy Awards was held, up until 2013.  2014 it was Cate Blanchet.

A NEW Year and NEW Outlook on Life

I'm excited for many things in the upcoming year!  One of the "things" I'm working on his getting healthier.  In November I lost about 17 lbs.  then I got off track with the sudden passing away of my brother. It happend right after Thankgiving, he was only 46, very young and it was quite a shock to me.  He had complications with his liver because of diabetes and had been in ill health for the past couple of years. He had a heart attack a couple of years ago, was a smoker.  I did not know about the Diabetes, we were not close in the last several years. There was a lot of history of conflict between us, but I will not elaborate here on my blog. He was my only brother so it's been very difficult for me and I'm heartbroken we never were able to reconcile befor his passing.  Were are both stubborn so that explains that. I've done a lot of thinking in the last couple of months about his health and my health {we were not blessed with the best genes, my father died of a heart attack in 93 in his early 60's} and I'm ready to get back on the BETTER ME track, I'm looking forward to a more healthy and productive 2015.   Eating healthier is a top priority, more veggies and fruits {I have a Pinterest Board with low fat recipes}  and walking whenever I get the chance {less TV watching}.  I walk the dogs in the morning when I don't have work and then in the evenings with my friend and neighbor, it usually it's late at night {after 8 p.m.} when we can both find the time to walk but like they say late is better than never. It is a great time for us to catch up on our lives and our childrens' lives and with each other. It doens't seem like I'm exercising so it quite enjoyable.  I plan on doing more weekend hikes on our nature trails with the WHOLE {including the four-legged ones}  family when we are not at the Soccer Field or Volleyball tournaments { High School Soccer is in full swing  and Club Volleyball just started} but I need to make me a priority too so I'm around to see the Soccer games and Volleyball Matches.

After all that excercising and eating healthy I'll need some down time {not just watching TV mindlessly}... I'm super duper excited for  Season 2 of Fixer Upper which starts tonight.  Yippy Skippy! So I don't get off track with my walks, I'm taping it and after my nightime walk I'll sit down and enjoy the show without any distractions.  I blogged about The Gaines HERE....It's my NEW favorite show on HGTV!!  Love their style and love how they interact with each other on the Fix it up series. They take old homes or homes that have character and have been in disrepair for awhile and redo them for their clients. That's what I love about it is that these are home are OLD and I love old homes.   Did I tell you how I'm boarding on stalker-type behavior with concerning the stars of the show, Chip and Joanna Gaines. I follow them on Instagram, I have thier website Magnolia Farms on my blog roll......Ok...I'm drawing the line, I'm not moving to Texas. But if ever they come to California........

I know I said, less TV watching but like I said more chosen shows not just watching another Desparate Housewife of _______________.   I'm choosing to watch Downton Abbey. Season 5 has started last Sunday!!  Last year I had never watched or even heard of Downton Abbey but then as a World Market Ambassador I signed up to Promote the #DotheDownton Instagram TEA party, so I started checking out the DVD's at the library from Season 1-4 and became enthralled with all the characters of this British "Soap Opera".  I always love period pieces on TV and movies, now I'm hooked Downton Abbey. Love that image of Tom with his daughter, Sibby.   How about you, do you watch either of these shows?  Speaking of History shows....Mr. Incredible and I watch The Vikings and that's sort of "our thing" together.  That starts in February.  

I've also found the time to sit down and finish a book after the holidays this year...I've been wanting to read Gone Girl after my friend recommended it to me last summer and now I'm almost at the end.   I heard it was also a really good movie,  it's playing at my local dollar theater, hopefully I'll be able to sneak in one day to go to the movies this week AFTER I finish reading it.  I do hope to READ more in the next coming year.  I'm not making resolutions....just trying to make changes for a BETTER and HEALTHIER NEW ME! Thoughtful...is my word...Thoughtful about what I put in my mouth, thoughtful about what I watch and thoughtful of what I say and how I treat people. 

My Daughter has decided to set up GOALS for the New Year...

One of her goals...Is to get better at Surfing...she got a "new" to her Surfboard along with Mr. Incredible and that is somthing they hope to do together in the coming year.

I'm Addicted to a New Show on HGTV!!

Meet Chip and Joanna Gaines, they are the hosts of the new show called Fixer Upper!! I was watching HGTV last week and came across their show...I can't tell you but I can't get enough of them.  Here is their bio from the HGTV website...

Chip and Joanna Gaines, hosts of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, have been flipping, remodeling and fixing up homes together for the past 12 years as owners of Magnolia Homes in Waco, Texas. They have worked on more than 100 homes together, combining Chip's great instinct on real estate and Joanna's unique eye for design.

The Gaines met after they both graduated from Baylor University, and like all of their projects, fate played a role in bringing them together. Shortly after their wedding, the couple purchased, gutted and renovated their first building together, and Joanna opened a home accessory store called Magnolia. Eight years later, this "can't be stopped" couple found an amazing way to balance having four kids while growing their business to include a real estate company, construction company, design firm and residential subdivision, Magnolia Villas.

Chip and Joanna are passionate about walking their clients through every aspect of the construction and design process and helping to turn their dreams into a reality. The Gaines have lived in Waco for over ten years. They enjoy working together with the same goal in mind — to make Waco and all Texas communities more beautiful, one project at a time.

If you don't believe me...check out some of these homes that they have fixed up, on one show the house was only $10,000 dollars, wish I could find a house like that here in So Cal....it was an old house with great bones but what they did to it was magic!  Here is a sample of some of their work.

Here is an exterior of one house they fixed up....Love their landscaping as well as their exterior color palette.

Can you see my style is all over this living room!  White couches and chairs and that coffee table...all that chippy lushness.

Oh yes!!   I love it...I think I'd like to attempt putting a top like this on my outside dining table. The Whites Grays, blue, greens...all my favorite colors.

 I love how Joanna took this beat up old picket fence gate and added the metal scripted family word to it...I have to replicate this on my wall in my family room. I have a perfect spot for it, above the mantel or the sideboard. 

 Oh I died and went to heaven in this kitchen!!   Oh my gosh...I'll take one please!!  The carrera marble, the white cabinets, the black hardware, the windows and the farmhouse sink!!

 Here is another kitchen, the two toned beadboard cabinets in grey and white..adds some interest and that backsplash, I'd love to use those type of arabesque tiles in my own home.

The mix of the warm wood on the table and the shiny mercury glass candlesticks with the black table and chairs and my favorite paint color on the walls....Sky Glass {well that's my paint color by Dunn Edwards }

Great lighting and those look very similiar to my Jackson Tub chairs from World Market, they are located in my patio cause Mr. Incredible chased them outside....they are so comfortable.

Here are some metal stools on this great island, Mr. Incredible would love to tear down our wall the one with the cottage bookshelves and put in an island I could see it done like this...but I'm too much in love with my cottage bookshelves to go for that.   Maybe way down the road after we put in another bathroom and a pool!!! 

Here is a boys room done  in neutrals, I like how she pulled in the industrial feel {masculine feel} here with the locker console and the P art on the wall...so darling.  I love this look too!

 

A bathroom redone with a great ruffly linen curtain...think I need to redo my curtain and I always love a hexagon tile, vintage chic. I think Joanna is my "style twin", I'm a little bit country and a little bit vintage with a beachy vibe thrown in.

Is this not the cutest coffee bar you have ever seen?!   I should do paint a chalkboard wall on the back of o my cottage hutch/bookshelves...wouldn't that be dramatic?  We have one chalkboard wall in the kitchen and the family and friends LOVE it so much!!  I don't want to erase all their messages and write new ones because it's so neat to read them over and over again.  I think I need more chalkboards in the house.

Look what they did with this dated atrium in a mid-century modern home....reminded me of this restaurant done in industrial pieces and reclaimed wood called Cucina Enoteca on Fashion Island in Newport.

I always love brick...and the table with herbs growing down the center of it...genius!
