My home is decorated in a beachy style, {cottage-beachy-farmhouse-country} sometimes people will ask, "Oh your home is Shabby Chic"...maybe a little of that too! I kind of used to decorate with my beach décor in the summer months but lately it's been on the beachy side the whole 12 months of the year even during the holidays, I manage to add Coastal Flair to Christmastime.
We don't live exactly near the beach, it is way too expensive for us...but I don't stop dreaming about living close by the shore. {I've lived in San Diego and Hawai'i in my 20s and 30's and those were my "beach years" where I lived walking distance from a beach. Mr. Incredible has surfed his whole life but took a bit of a break from surfing in his 30's and 40's and now my youngest has been bitten by the surf bug.
This past weekend Mr. Incredible and I had a conversation about his surfboard "residing" in the corner of the dining room. He usually keeps it in the garage next to his lawnmower, I think that's a great place for it. The conversation sort of went like this..I say, "hey it seems like this surfboard doesn't seem to be making it out the garage lately?" to his response, "isn't this a beach house or are you a poser?" Hmmm...well...that's maybe a bit true but I thought to myself, if the board enhances the style of our home I'm all in...but it's in this very, ugly black surf bag and I mean ugly. If it was in a burlap bag I'd say sure it can stay leaned up against my hutch. My daughter keeps her board in the corner of the room minus an ugly surf bag...it fits her room and adds to the surf vibe she has got going on in there.
So it got me to thinking what kind of surfboards would add some "surf vibe" to our Cottage on Cullen. The above photo with this beautiful looking white and wood surfboard fits in perfect in this mid-century modern home.
This image is from Beach Cottage and she actually lives near the beach in Australia!! How lucky! I love how she has displayed her all white surfboard on her outside deck.
Now I know this isn't and actual surfboard but a great way to add a "surf-look" to an entryway. The boat cleats make a perfect hook to hang your beach bags from.
I love the look of Balsa Wood surfboards or maybe it's Koa {a very hardwood from Hawai'i} , and up on some surf racks on a wall makes for a great look and out of the way.
What a great way to reuse a board as a coffee table!! Isn't this a cool idea? Take a look at those nautical lights...LOVE those too!
Speaking of lights another awesome idea is to wire pendent lights a surfboard and suspend the surfboard from the ceiling either in a kitchen or patio. Genius.
Hey, I like this idea...paint and old board with chalkboard paint and you got yourself a unique and creative chalkboard.
Or you can take it outside and make a beautiful surf shed along with an outdoor shower. Living near the beach it is a must that you have an outdoor shower. When I lived in Hawai'i my friends had outdoor showers and I used to LOVE taking showers in them with the clear blue skies above you and the fresh air. As you can see there are lots of creative ways to display surfboards and go HERE if you'd like to read about the history of Surfboards but for now... I suppose the board can stay put unless I need to take pictures for the blog...then it's moving to the "man cave". Surfs Up!
I absolutely love surfboards in designs and these are some great examples! The surfboard mounted to the ceiling with hanging pendant lights is just magical and would look great over a tiki bar. I also like when they are hung on the wall sideways. Great post!
