I took a Design Style quiz today over at Sproost . Don't you sometimes wonder what decorating style you lean towards. I know that I don't fit into a round hole all nice and tidy, I incorporate many styles in my current decor. The quiz came back saying I was 74% Nantucket Style. That's pretty dead on as you can see from the following exhibits.
I know I love the beach. So it's not at all surprising when recently I was "chatting" with an old friend on Facebook and he stated that what reminded him of me was "the beach" I told him when I think of donuts that reminds me of him. {not sure he was happy with that reference, but it is what it is } I have always longed to live at the beach { i mean who doesn't pine away to live with the waves lulling you to sleep at night} When I went to college and moved south to San Diego, I did not live inland I lived on the coast in Ocean Beach on Narragansett St. {how is that for a Nantucket Style Name?}. When I moved to Kaua'i in 87, well how much nearer can you get to the beach than living in Hawai'i? I literally lived in a Beach Shack on the North Shore for 10 years!!! Today I still carry the beach theme to my current home since moving back to California in 97. Here is what Sproost describes as a Nantucket Style Home Decor..
Nantucket Style
Oh how you love the beach! Who doesn't, right? And so your dream home is either perched in your favorite beach town, or you've brought that favorite beach town into your house.
Materials
Your art and accessories speak directly to the activities that are found at the beach. Pieces of driftwood you found here, pictures or paintings of the amazing views there. Things that remind you of the coast - surf boards or fishing boats - are found throughout the house. The feeling of the seaside is both abstract and literal in the design of your space. The fabrics are natural, cottons and linens and are light in color and touch. Much of the furniture is wood or wood framed (the lighter the better, think driftwood!) and wicker, when done right, is a must.
Colors
And since your true inspiration is the sea, the colors and textures in your home are the same that you would find at your favorite beach: white, light beiges and grays of the sand and driftwood, a variety of blues for the ocean and sky, and greens and vibrant blues of the sea glass... but the key is white! Your space should feel light and airy and give off the mood one has when at the beach: laid back!
Space Planning
Your furniture is comfortable and the layout is cozy. The more it reminds you of actually sitting on the warm sand the better! And what do you do at the beach? Hang out with family and friends - and your home is just an extension of this play place... and though the space is filled with large white furniture, it somehow manages to feel both durable and casual

Nantucket Style was only 74%, so what about the other piece of the pie?
It also said I was 24% French Eclectic....hmmmm {i'm thinking it would be more on the Country side of French not eclectic} because of the deep reds and yellows I have in my home along with wrought iron and black accents so I have to disagree with that description Sproost decided I was. So I took the quiz again and yet again popped up I'm a Nantucket influnence in my home decor but the quiz also said I was Traditional Country... I definetely can see that with my warm honey browns and baskets.
Traditional Country
Even if your backyard isn't acres of farmland and you don't actually have a chicken coop, your house sure brings you back to a time when that was the case. You love spaces that feel casual and lived in. Furniture is practical and comfortable, and yet at the same time its very stylish. The best part of country style is how much it highlights collection and found objects. Antiques here, garage sale finds there and Aunt Milly's hand-me-downs throughout. Unique items that used to serve very practical purposes are now on display, and their history seems to permeate the home. Each space in the home seems to invite friends and family to come in and stay a while. There is a true sense of home felt throughout.
Materials
When it comes to materials in Traditional Country homes, think rustic, warm and comfortable. Wood or natural tile floors, natural or painted wood tables and chairs, and natural materials on the soft furnishings. Stripes, plaids and florals are popular and often all are mixed in one room. Soft vintage leather and suede are common and wrought and rusty iron also reinforce the rustic nature of the rooms. Large wood pieces of furniture are very common, and help manage storage throughout the home. Wallpaper is very popular and most often highlights floral patterns. For traditional country, the concept of minimalism is avoided at all cost. It's the collections that give the space character and reinforce the lived-in nature of the spaces.
Colors
For color, spaces can go either bright and airy or soft and muted. Think of the countryside in spring and summer with yellows, bright greens and blues. Or you can go for more of a fall country day, and go a bit darker but still stay in the earth tones. Dark browns, reds and greens. Either direction you go in, be it light or dark, the key is warmth. Traditional country rooms rarely, if ever, feel cold.
